OUR ETHOS

Brown But BLACK is a cultural and communal hub that centers the lived experiences of Black women as a source of knowledge from which self-authorship emerges.

For generations, systems have reduced Black women to our capacity to produce and endure, while overlooking the interior lives that shape our selfhood. This is an understanding many of us encounter early, often in classrooms, long before we have the language for what is being asked of us.

Founded by Empress and Kaydee, Brown But BLACK exists to honor Black women’s personhood — creating spaces, language, and frameworks that support reflection and self-determination.

BBB invites a deeper relationship with ourselves and one another, cultivating a community where we can arrive as we are and meet each other with curiosity.
